  • Humility

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence or stand in the place of the great,
    Proverbs 25:6 ESV
    https://bible.com/bible/59/pro.25.6.ESV

Maybe we read this verse and think it wouldn’t apply to us. When are we ever going to be in the presence of the king, or of great people. There’s a spiritual principle here though.

One day, we will meet before the throne of the King of kings. We can’t just waltz into His presence in the assumption that He’ll automatically whisk us away to glory. That’s not how it works.

As Jesus says, those who exalt themselves will be humbled. The world assumes that to get ahead we have to be into self promotion. The Bible teaches the opposite.

Jesus also says that those who humble themselves will be exalted. If we recognise that we have no entitlement as sinners before a holy God, that’s a good start. Then we can humbly receive Christ as our Saviour and Lord.

It is powerful people’s prerogative to put us in our places. If we try and put ourselves up the pecking order, we are likely to be knocked down a peg or two. We need to know our places.

‘Lord Almighty, help us to humble ourselves before Your Majesty. May You grant us entrance into Your glory on that great and final day, for Your honour we pray, amen’

  • Writing Prompt: Belongings

What personal belongings do you hold most dear?

As you can guess, my most treasured belonging is my phone. The most important things about it are the YouVersion Bible app and the notes app, where I write my devotionals.

If it wasn’t for technology, my most treasured belonging might be my daily reading Bible, but I don’t need it, seeing as I have the Bible app on my phone.

My car is also pretty important to me for getting me to and from work, but it is quite rusty and old, so you wouldn’t class it as treasured by me!

  • Writing Prompt: Collections

    Do you have any collections?

I inherited someone’s stamp collection which I think remains somewhere in my garage. I have no interest in stamp collecting; although some of the more interesting ones are on display.

My wife and I had this idea to collect souvenir key rings from places we visit, but that fizzled out and we don’t bother anymore.

I don’t really practice what I preach, but I think we should ‘travel light’ through our earthly pilgrimage. We’re not going to be able to take anything with us when we die, so there’s no point hording stuff.

  • Questions

Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
    Psalm 10:1 ESV
    https://bible.com/bible/59/psa.10.1.ESV

Of course, God doesn’t stand far away. He doesn’t hide Himself in times of trouble. Yet it sometimes feels like He does.

God is omnipresent: He’s present everywhere. Not only so, but He’s all powerful and all loving. He’s able and willing to help us.

Sometimes though, God allows us to go through troubles. Often, in doing so, He’s increasing our reliance on Him. He’s causing us to cry out to Him like the Psalmist.

Job felt similar about his suffering, but God sustained him through it. He never lost faith in Him. God doesn’t mind honesty about how we’re feeling.

‘Sovereign God, help us to be honest with You about how we feel, but never let us lose faith in You our only hope. In Jesus’ name, amen’

  • Writing Prompt: Legacy

What is the legacy you want to leave behind?

Mark Hall of Casting Crowns sings that he doesn’t want to leave a legacy. He just wants his life to all be about ‘only Jesus’ (the title of the song I’m referring to).

Admirable though that sentiment is, I think we all inevitably leave our own legacy when we leave this world. As a wise man once said,

    ‘Only one life

    Will soon be past

    Only what’s done

    For Christ will last’

As for me, I focus a lot on my voluminous collections of writings, but I’m a bit like Father Mackenzie in the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby: hardly anyone reads my writings!

The best legacy I could have is to have bourne much fruit of the Spirit, ‘love joy and peace etc.’ and to have helped draw people closer to Christ, whether for the first time or the thousandth!

I especially hope that my own children, who are already lovely, come to a clear faith in the Lord and become bright shining lights for Him in this dark world.
